TOROBEKOV  Suyutbek

Suyutbek Torobekov has come a long way from his humble beginnings in the remote Talas Oblast of eastern Kyrgyz Republic. Upon graduation from the Kyrgyz State Art College in 1977, Suyutbek went on to earn a degree in Painting from the Repin Institute of Architecture, Sculpture, and Painting in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1984. He joined the Artists' Union of the Kyrgyz Republic in 1988. In 2001, he was named a "Cultural Figure of the Kyrgyz Republic."

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Suyutbek participated in numerous national, regional and international exhibitions, including an exhibition of Kyrgyz painters in Ulan Bator, Mongolia (1988); a solo show at the Eastern Gallery in Moscow, Russia (1993); a UN-sponsored exhibition in the Kyrgyz Republic, where he won first prize for his work "On the Evening" (1996); exhibitions in Turkey and Switzerland (1996 and 1998); and the 70th anniversary celebration for Ch. Aitmatov, where he won first prize for his work "Portrait of Chokmorov" (1999).

More recently, Suyutbek has exhibited his works in Germany, France, and Iran (2001), Belgium (2002), and closer to home at the "International Year of Mountains" international exhibition in Bishkek (2002). His works can be seen at the Kyrgyz State Museum of Fine Art, museums in Russia and Kazakhstan, and private collections and galleries in Germany, USA, Japan, Israel, and Turkey.
